Safeguard yourself against typhoid and gastroenteritis

With a recent report revealing an alarming increase in the cases of typhoid and gastroenteritis in the city, experts are warning Mumbaikars to be extra cautious when it comes to eating out and following simple hygiene.

And with the monsoon also here, it is best to be safe than sorry. Here are some things to follow:

Avoid eating from roadside eateries. The water used in such places can be contaminated, which can lead to a severe infection.

Wash your hands often especially after a visit to the bathroom in a public place. Washing hands properly (at least 30-40 seconds) goes a long way in preventing diseases like typhoid, cholera and gastroenteritis. Make it a habit to wash your hands before eating.
Use a hand sanitiser often to ensure that your hands remain clean especially if you travel a lot during the day.

Avoid eating salads and fruits from outside because you don't know how long they've been cut and kept open. The longer they've been there, the higher the chances of contamination and illness. It is best to stick to fruits that are peeled in front of you.
Keep yourself hydrated by drinking a lot of fluids. Always boil water before consumption to avoid any infections.

Your kitchen needs to be kept clean. This will also ensure that roaches and rodents stay away. Make sure that your utensils have also been cleaned thoroughly.
