Maharashtra
netas not interested in donating their organs. Only 4 legislators have given
consent!
When it comes to cadavers and organs, the elected
representatives in the state do not believe in leading by example.
Out of the 208 MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) and
MLCs (Members of Legislative Council) who had sought the forms for donations,
only four have actually pledged their organs, Maharashtra has 288 MLAs and 289
MLCs. (Also read: Less than one in a million Indians
donate their organs)
The state organised a special campaign in the legislature on
June 30 and health minister Suresh Shetty wrote letters to all elected
representatives to pledge their organs.
The health ministry planned this campaign to make organ
donations popular in the state.
The public representatives were supposed to take the consent
of their families and submit the forms to the health ministry.
Health minister Suresh Shetty and his family members and
Legislative Council chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh have pledged their organs and
submitted their consent forms.
Minister of State for PWD and Water Resources Ranjit Kamble
and Vile Parle MLA Krishna Hegde have submitted forms for organ and cadaver
donation.
‘I have already submitted the forms for donation of skin,
eyes and vital organs. Although it is a personal choice, it would be ideal if
more people come forward to donate their organs,’ Hegde said.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s wife Susheela Chavan had
also consented to donate organ.

Kerala gets
first government medical college since 1982
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday inaugurated a
government medical college – the first to come up here in three decades – and
announced that eight more were in the pipeline and would be ready in two years’
time.
The last government medical college that was commissioned
was at Trissur in 1982. With the inauguration of the 520-bed Manjeri Medical
College, the number of such institutions in the state has gone up to six.
The opposition Left Democratic Front, who have declared war
against Chandy for not quitting in the wake of the solar scam, in which, they
allege his office is involved, boycotted the programme and staged protest near
the venue by waving black flags.
Chandy criticised their stand.
‘This is an historic occasion and when there is celebration
here, a section is staying away. If they keep out of developmental progress in
the state, soon they will be sidelined. The whole focus of our government is to
provide state of the art health care to the entire society here and for that
another eight more medical colleges will soon be ready,’ he said.
He said the foundation stone for four government medical
colleges have been laid at Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad and
Thiruvananthapuram and will be soon laid at Wayanad and Kasargode.
‘We are mulling taking over the Kochi Cooperative Medical College
and the Pariyaram Medical College which is right now under the cooperative
sector,’ he said.
‘Things are fast changing in other parts of our country and
the world but in our state it’s only slogans and strikes… but we will not waste
our time. Instead, our government is committed to the all-round development of
the state and we will go forward despite the non-cooperation from a section,’
said Chandy accusing the Left opposition of blocking the state’s
progress.
