Rebuild medical profession's lost glory: Harsh Vardhan
New Delhi: Health Minister Harsh
Vardhan Sunday asked doctors to "introspect" and rebuild the
"lost glory" of the medical profession in India.
Addressing medical professionals at
a function here marking the centenary celebrations of the Delhi Medical Association,
he said: "I would like to see DMA reviving its social mission and
contributing to the government's health for all objective.
"I
would like to involve all sections of society in achieving the UN Millennium
Development Goals."
The DMA was founded in 1914 by a
group of doctors - Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, Abdul Rehman, S.P. Shroff, H.L. Keal,
J.K. Sain, Bhairon Dayal and I.T. Mittra.
Harsh Vardhan said the medical
community of India was presently under scrutiny for instances of unethical
practices on the part of some doctors.
"Though
the vast majority of doctors are faultlessly devoted to duty, some are giving
the profession a bad name," he said.

'Diabetes education' reduces BP, blood sugar
Washington: A study has revealed
that diabetes education helps people to cope with their diabetic condition by reducing
blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
The
research showed that after receiving diabetes education for 15 months, 1,263
participants on average lowered their A1C (blood sugar) levels by 67 percent
and their LDL (bad) cholesterol levels by 53 percent and 25 percent of the
patients had high blood pressure, compared to 32 percent prior to the study.
Lovelyamma Varghese, Director of
Nursing Practice and quality for the Ambulatory Care Network at New
York-Presbyterian Hospital, said that diabetes education was not only helpful,
but it was necessary for people with the condition as it was designed to empower
patients to self-manage and reach their goals.
He insisted that they have shown
this program could really work with their patient-centered approach, which
prioritized their patients' need and as diabetes educators.
Varghese
added that they could go into their homes, speak their language, identify
opportunities for behavioral changes, even open the fridge and see what was in
there, as a part of the partnership.
