Popcorn: A healthy treat
We’ve just got one more reason to dig into it. According to a latest research at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, popcorn, has been declared as thehealthiest snack.
It also reveals that one serving of unprocessed air popped popcorn equals to more than 70 per cent of the daily intake of whole grain and gives you 300mg of antioxidants and fibre. One would be surprised at the number of calories that get cut down when it's air-popped. Not just health benefits, air popped popcorns also come loaded with other delights such as its fluffier, less chewy in texture and evenly popped.
Unhealthy snacking amongst kids and teenagers is quite popular these days. With a rise in junk food options, health is taking a backseat for kids, leading to a rise in obesity related issues at a very young age. Air-popped popcorn is an option that has come to the rescue of junk food fanatics. Researcher Joe Vinson, who led this study, assertively terms these tiny pellets as ‘Golden nuggets of nutrition’ with strong conviction.
“Ready to eat popcorn is a healthier and better snack option. It is naturally low on calories and fat and has a high quantity of dietary fiber and antioxidants. It can easily fill the gap in daily quantity of whole grain required for a person,” says Dr Satish Kumar Singh, head of Research, Quality and Innovation, Agrotech Foods. Leading dietician Tapasya Mundhra says, “Popcorn is rich in fibre and low in cholesterol, saturated fats, sugar and sodium levels. Hence, it is good for weight loss. It also benefits people suffering from heart problems, diabetes and many other lifestyle diseases.”
